Autumn Term

10/9/21

I have been very impressed with how well Deer Class have settled into year 6 and they have been a super class to teach so far. As well as working hard in class, we have also been talking about the residential trip to Broneirion. I will also set up a worry box in class so we can help them if they have any concerns. English has seen us developing our story writing techniques. In maths, we have been focusing on place value as well as rounding and negative numbers. They have also enjoyed looking through our class library and choosing some new books; it is great to see so many keen to read. As Walt Disney once said, “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.”

This week, we have been developing our knowledge of how to work out percentages of amounts in maths. In English, we have been writing a story based around the text we have been reading, with a focus on the use of speech. The children enjoyed using role play to orally rehearse their stories before producing their first drafts. In science, the children have enjoyed learning about the respiratory and circulatory systems so will hopefully be able to tell you how they work! David Hockney has been our focus in art, where the children have researched his artwork as an introduction to the topic. I hope the children are all managing to complete their mymaths online homework which is set each week. If there are any problems with logins, please let me know.

Last week we took part in a live webinar with author Natalie Costa. The session was called Build Your Self Confidence and gave the children tips on how to be more confident and overcome anxieties. She showed them how to control their breathing, how to change their mindset from anxiety to curiosity and how their posture can affect how they feel. This week, as part of National Poetry Day, we read a poem about marine conservation and recycling, commended in the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2020. This poem encouraged us to think about how the choices we make affect the environment. Related to poetry, in music over the last two weeks, the children have used the poem ‘Pleasant Sounds’ to create their own compositions all about autumn.

The children have now started their Police Cadet programme and really enjoyed their first session with PCSO Jacqui Fletcher from West Mercia Police. It has been designed to develop the children’s leadership skills, promote citizenship, community awareness and an understanding of the diverse work of the police, through a range of fun and exciting activities. In French, the children have been learning how to describe themselves using extended sentences. In maths, we have been learning and applying the rules of divisibility as well as mastering the written method of long division. The children really enjoy their geography and DT work last week as they used their sewing skills to create a collage depicting the features of a river. This will be displayed in our classroom when it has been completed. Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy half term.

I hope you have all received your child’s report which was emailed out to you on Friday 5th November. It was great to see many of you for Parents’ evening this week to discuss how they are getting on this term. If you have any queries about anything, please don’t hesitate to get in touch as we are here to help. This week the children have continued with their Police Cadets course where they have been learning about road safety. Last week PC Strangwood, our local police officer, also came in to deliver one of the sessions alongside PCSO Jacqui Fletcher. On Wednesday, Local author Amanda Humphries, who is an ex-pupil at Cleobury Mortimer Primary School, came to visit CMPS. She talked about the writing process and what inspired her to be an author. She also introduced her new book called Joe and the Kite and read the first few chapters to the children. Deer Class really enjoyed meeting her and being able to ask her questions about life as an author.
