Pantomime

We were extremely lucky as we started the year with a treat.

We went up to Lacon Childe to watch the pantomime Snow White. The visiting theatre company put on a great production and the children really enjoyed being involved with the traditional pantomime audience participation. They particularly enjoyed it when members of staff got invited onto the stage to dance! I’m not sure the staff were quite so thrilled but it was all part of the fun!

STEM

Year 6 took part in a STEM activity run by the Sea Cadets. They learnt how something with the same mass can either sink or float depending on its density. For example, the cork and the marble both had the same mass but because the marble was denser than water, it sunk. The children then learnt about buoyancy. Their challenge was to design a boat out of card, foil and sellotape which could hold marbles. The children all had lots of great ideas but the winning design managed to hold over 100 marbles!

Chinese New Year

STEM Competition

Recently, a group from Year Six visited Lacon Childe School for an inter-school STEM challenge. Each team had to design and build a wind turbine out of cardboard, cardboard rolls, lollipop sticks and cello tape. After a brainstorming activity, a final design was agreed upon and constructed. It was then tested using a hairdryer to create wind and a voltmeter to measure any electricity produced. All our teams did incredibly well, and although another school were declared the winners, we had fun and learned a lot about renewable energy.

My Colours by Colin West

Poetry by Heart

On 13/2/23 Yr5 and 6 took part in a poetry workshop led by an English specialist, Mrs Britton. It is part of our build up to world poetry day when those who would like to, are going to take part in a Trust-wide poetry slam.
Mrs Britton inspired us with her performance of a poem she had learnt before giving us tips on how to perform: stance, eyes fixed on a point, voice
projection and movements. She then modelled this with all of Yr5 and 6 as we learnt and performed the poem My Colours by Colin West.

The children all did really well to learn and perform a poem in one session.
