To celebrate Mental Health Week and the key foci of anxiety, in year 6, we looked at a variety of different strategies to help us calm down and manage our feelings.

We started the session by trying to describe what anxiety was.  It decided that anxiety is when:

  • a lack of confidence to try new things
  • feeling nervous or panicky a lot of the time
  • feeling overwhelmed
  • finding everyday tasks difficult
  • feeling faint
  • having difficulty concentrating
  • feeling angry or irritable
  • experiencing lots of unhelpful thoughts
  • avoiding things someone usually enjoys
  • experiencing a fast heartbeat
  • having difficulty sleeping

We tried stretching, 4-7-8-breathing exercises, tensing and relaxing our bodies, practiced yoga moves and completed a guided meditation.  We tried all of these activities and realised that some worked well and some were not so useful.

We finished the session, by making a self-soothing box and filled it with different strategies that help us to feel calm and less anxious.

Mortimer History Society

Year 6 were extremely fortunate as they participated in a history workshop with, local expert, Mike Beazley.

He brought in replicas of medieval armour and artefacts into school and shared them with us.

We learnt about the different weapons including: a bow and arrow, knives and swords. It was brilliant and we found out what the Mortimer Family Coat of Arms looked like.

We also explored many different pieces of armour and tried on lots of helmets, mail and used a shield to keep us safe.  The armour was so heavy and we needed a ‘squire’ to help us get dressed. It was great fun.

After that, we found out about how much money we would earn for doing different jobs. Also, we looked at some medieval coins.  We were amazed to hear that they used to cut the coins in half if they didn’t want to use all of their money.

Finally, we learnt about the food, drink and entertainment that they used to have. We were amazed to find out that they used to eat with a knife and didn’t have a fork.
