Spring Term 2022-23

Squirrel Class Termly Overviews

Pantomime - Snow White

At the beginning of term, we were lucky enough to be invited up to Lacon Childe School to watch a pantomime production of Snow White. Miss Carter volunteered to go on stage for a 'dance off' and we were all very proud of her.

STEM - Under the Sea

For STEM Week, we have focused our learning on ‘Under the Sea’. We have listed the animals we know to live in the sea and discussed how some animals live in the sea and on land, such as turtles. We also played a matching game where we identified various species of animals, too.

Our main focus has been on Clown Fish. We watched a video clip all about the small fish and then made a diorama with various facts around the outside. Here are some of our favourites:

Chinese New Year

To mark Chinese New Year, we watched a short video clip which taught us how it is celebration amongst the Chinese culture.

"Each year is an animal from the zodiac story." - OH

"People clean their houses to get rid of bad luck." - HB

Girls Disney Football Session

The girls were invited up to Lacon Childe School for a Disney football session with Ms Stokes and the young leaders. The girls had a great time and came back showing us their football skills.

"I had a great time. It was so much fun! Next time, we're allowed to wear Disney dresses!" - H.B

"I was really proud because I scored a goal." - M.D

Safer Internet Day

Children's Mental Health Week

The children have focused on mental health and how to look after their own mental health. They have understood that it is fine to feel different emotions and have discussed the different things they can do that help them to relax or to feel better.

As the theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week is ‘Let’s Connect’, the children have thought about how connecting with people close to them can help when they are feeling sad. They have used a checklist to find other children in the class who might have similar hobbies to them, this has opened up conversations and allowed children to connect with others in the class.

Dance Fest

To mark International Women's Day, the children in Squirrel Class enjoyed listening to stories about famous female creatives such as Frida Kahlo and Zaha Hadid.

"Frida was a painter"

"She like painting portraits of people and herself."

"Zaha was an architect, which means she designed buildings."

In support of Red Nose Day, we came to school wearing something red. Some of us dyed our hair, some of us wore hats and some of us went all out in head to toe red!

Mother's Day

In honour of Mother's Day, we made these wonderful cards to celebrate the important women in our life. We also discussed what makes a Mum so special.

"I love my Mum because she gives the best cuddles."

"I love Mummy because she keeps me safe."

"My Mummy is the best because she works really hard to make me happy."

World Down Syndrome Day

How have teddy bears changed over time?

The children have discussed features of teddy bears that have continued to stay the same and features that have changed over the past 100 years. They have brought in their own favourite teddy bear from home, showing and describing this bear to other children in the class. They have ordered different teddy bears on a timeline and have pointed out the key changes and features that have continued over time.
