PE Curriculum Statement

Our intention

PE and sport are an essential part of our ethos at Cleobury Mortimer Primary School. We recognise the vital contribution PE can play in the physical, social and spiritual development of every child. Our aim is to ensure all of our pupils leave school leading healthy and active lifestyles, with a lifelong affiliation to sport and exercise. PE is a vital part of our curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils. We intend to deliver quality first teaching and learning opportunities that engage and inspire all pupils to succeed in PE and also in developing crucial life skills. We aim to teach pupils the importance of sportsmanship and give them the opportunities to practise the fundamental skills necessary to cooperate and collaborate successfully. We intend to instil positive attitudes, including perseverance, resilience and self-belief, by allowing pupils the opportunity to practise and compete against themselves, each other and pupils from other schools. Swimming is an essential life skill; we aspire for all children to leave primary school able to demonstrate water safety skills and able to swim at least 25 metres Once the curriculum has been taught, children will have met the statutory guidance outlined, as well as gaining a range of life skills that will support them as they continue their journey.

The implementation of the PE curriculum includes:

• Pupils participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week covering at least 2 hours.
• The PE skills based curriculum is challenging and enjoyable, facilitating learning through a range of sporting activities: dance, gymnastics, athletics, invasion games, striking and fielding games, net and wall games, swimming, outdoor and adventurous activities and wellbeing.
• Our progression ladders set out clear paths of progression across a range of different areas sporting areas. Teachers actively factor this into their planning and then refer back to this when assessing on the assessment grid.
• The long term plan sets out our units of study, ensuring that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
• A varied range of afterschool sports clubs are available for all pupils to attend four nights a week.
• Year 6 pupils receive Jumping Jaxx training enabling them to lead a range of sporting activities for KS1 pupils during lunch time.
• Year 6 pupils will have the opportunity to participate in a residential trip, where children will be able to deepen their independent skills relating to our curriculum drivers.
• Pupils participate in a variety of different sports, festivals and competitions through our sports partnership with TRUSTed. This offers pupils a chance to put the skills they have acquired from lessons into competitive scenarios against pupils from other schools.
• We engage with a range of different sporting organisations from within our local community.
• Children in KS2 will receive swimming lessons in the Summer term to support their confidence in the water, knowledge of water safety and ability to swim 25m.
• Annually, the school celebrates sporting values and principles as we complete sports day.

Impact

The impact of children’s progress and their ability to know more and remember more will be visible through a range of methods. These may include end of unit assessments or quizzes, hot and cold tasks, spoken responses, progress over time in pupils’ books, extended writing or even an end of unit project.

Our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them in a range of different sports and scenarios. Exposing pupils to a range of sports might foster a passion for sport that will be pursued outside of school and even later in life. Our pupils are physically active; pupils will appreciate the need to take responsibility for their own health and fitness. We inspire and engage pupils, fostering a lifelong love for sport, and prepare them with the skills and understanding necessary to live a happy, healthy and active life.

The National Curriculum defines cultural capital as: ‘the essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said and helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement’. This powerful knowledge can be split into two categories: powerful subject knowledge and powerful personal knowledge.

Cultural Capital

Through our sports partnership we are able to access a range of inclusive sports which offer something for everyone.

Alongside this, we also engage in other sporting opportunities, such as competing in cross-country at Bedstone College, engaging within football sessions with Kidderminster Harriers, completing orienteering at the Pioneer Centre and also performing dance at The Regal Theatre in Tenbury.

We use local resources and organisations to provide the children with access to stimulating sporting experiences that will enrich their cultural capital.
