We have had an extremely busy fortnight and the children have settled into school well after their summer holidays.

I have been impressed by their enthusiasm and determination to try their best.

In English, we have been practising our prediction skills by exploring The Lost Thing by Shaun Tann.  The children have been developing their ability to justify their opinions and are using examples from the text to back up their points of view. They have made some interesting observations and I like how they have listened to their peers. I have also been impressed by many of the children’s cursive, handwriting.  It makes their writing enjoyable to read.

In maths, we have been exploring place value of numbers up to ten million.  This has caused great excitement as they read and write these larger numbers.  The children have understood the importance of place holders and have been ordering and comparing number too.  They have also begun to use their place value skills to solve more complicated mathematical problems.

In topic, we have begun exploring rivers and where our water comes from.  The children made models of the water cycle and have enjoyed being able to identify evaporation and condensation. They have also explained why the water cycle is a closed cycle and were disgusted to know that the water they drink may have been drunk before.

The children also loved their Police Cadets session and learnt all about the phonetic alphabet.  They also were able to use the real Police radio to ask for a pretend vehicle check.  The children listened to each other well and it was great to see them encouraging their friends if they were unsure.

After listening to their campaign speeches, we also elected our School Council representatives and House Captains.

Finally, we really enjoyed spending the day at Lacon Childe. We had lots of fun but were exhausted.

Please do not hesitate to pop in and ask any questions or come and say hello.

A super start to year 6.
