To help the children learn about rivers, we visited our local river. The River Rea.

We walked from school, past the church, to the Wells before heading onto the river.  The children used maps to help them navigate and realised how landmarks, symbols and contour lines can  be helpful.

As we walked along the river, the children observed that the river was quite narrow, shallow and relatively slow moving.  We also noticed signs of erosion and deposition. We saw many features including: a waterfall, meander, erosion and deposition when we stood on the bridge.

After looking at the evidence, we decided that we were probably looking at the middle course.

As we walked  the children used a leaf guide to help us identify some of the trees that were located on the river bank.

We discovered that the River Rea is a tributary which means that it flows into another river.  When we return to school we will use an atlas to find out which river it is.
