Year 2

Welcome to Cub Class with Miss Grove

Supported by Mrs Barr and Mrs Williams

In Cubs Class, children continue their journey through Key Stage 1, building on the knowledge and skills developed in Year 1. Throughout Year 2, children become increasingly confident and independent learners. Their learning includes structured lessons alongside a range of practical, creative and engaging activities across the wider curriculum.

Our Curriculum

Throughout the year, children will explore a broad and exciting curriculum across all subject areas. You can find our yearly curriculum overview on this page, which shows the topics and areas of learning covered throughout Year 2.

Our curriculum may occasionally be adapted to make the most of school events, celebrations and other learning opportunities. If you have particular knowledge or expertise linked to one of our topics, or know someone who does, we would love to hear from you. Opportunities for visitors to share their experiences can really enrich the children's learning.

PE

Children should come to school wearing their school PE kit on PE days. If your child has pierced ears, earrings should be removed or covered with micropore tape.

PE days may change throughout the year due to timetabling, sporting events and other school activities. Current PE days and any changes will be communicated to families via Class Dojo.

Please ensure that all items of school uniform and PE kit are clearly named so that they can be returned to the correct child if misplaced.

Outdoor Classroom

There is no set day for Outdoor Classroom activities in Year 2. When a session is planned, we will let families know in advance via Class Dojo so that children can come to school wearing suitable clothing.

Reading at Home

To support your child as they develop into a confident and independent reader, we ask families to read the decodable text provided by school at least four times across the week. Spending just ten minutes a day reading together can make a significant difference to your child's reading development.

Please record each time you read together in your child's reading record. Children will also be recognised and rewarded for regular reading at home through stickers, certificates and special prizes.

Children's reading books are changed once a week. Keeping the same book for several reads is intentional: it gives children the opportunity to revisit the text, building their confidence and fluency while also developing a secure understanding of what they have read. As children's phonics knowledge develops, they also learn that sounds within our language can be represented in different ways, so repeated reading provides valuable opportunities to practise this.

The books sent home are carefully matched to the phonics teaching taking place in school. This means that your child is practising at home what they have already been taught in class. Sometimes this may include a sound first introduced in Badger Class that your child needs further opportunities to consolidate in Cubs Class. Children will only be asked to read a book independently when they are able to decode it successfully themselves.

Your child may also bring home a Reading for Pleasure book. These books are not expected to be fully decodable and are intended to be shared and enjoyed together. Your child might read the words they are able to decode while you read the remainder, or you may simply read the story to them. There is no expectation for your child to read their Reading for Pleasure book independently.

Above all, we want children to experience the enjoyment of sharing books and develop a love of reading alongside their growing reading skills.

Homework

Children will receive a Homework Menu each half term, containing a range of activities they can complete at home to support and extend the learning taking place in school.

Keeping in Touch

Class Dojo is our main platform for communication between school and home. Please check it regularly to keep up to date with important messages and information.

You can use Class Dojo to contact the class team with any questions or concerns, share photographs and achievements from home, and upload homework through your child's portfolio.

Throughout the week, we will also use Class Dojo to share some of the learning taking place in Cubs Class. It is a lovely way for families to stay connected with what the children are doing in school and celebrate their successes with us.

We hope your child has a happy and successful year in Cubs Class. If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
