We are delighted to welcome you and your child to Year 5. We have lots of wonderful learning planned throughout the year and look forward to watching the children grow in confidence, develop their independence and celebrate their achievements.

Our yearly curriculum overview, available on this page, gives you an outline of the exciting topics we will explore throughout Year 5.
Although this provides a guide to our learning, there may be occasions when we adapt our plans to make the most of school events, celebrations or other opportunities as they arise.
If you, or someone you know, has experience linked to any areas of our curriculum, we would love to hear from you. Visitors, demonstrations and even video calls can bring our learning to life and are always greatly appreciated.
Please make sure that all uniform, particularly jumpers and cardigans, is clearly labelled with your child's name. This makes it much easier for us to return any misplaced items.
Children should come to school wearing their school PE kit on PE days. If your child has pierced ears, please ensure earrings are removed before school or covered with micropore tape.
PE days may change throughout the year due to timetabling, sporting events and other school activities. Current PE days and any changes will be communicated to families via Class Dojo.
Children will complete regular homework activities alongside a larger project each half term, linked to their learning in school. Children will earn 5 Dojo Points for each project they complete and submit.
Homework can be uploaded through your child's Class Dojo portfolio.
Reading continues to be one of our highest priorities in Year 5. Every child will receive a reading book, which should be brought into school each day.
Regular reading at home makes a huge difference to children's fluency, confidence and understanding, so we encourage children to read little and often.
If you have some spare time and would be interested in volunteering to hear children read during the afternoons, we would be incredibly grateful. Please send us a message on Class Dojo if this is something you would like to help with.
Every child will receive a Year 5 spelling booklet to support and complement the spelling scheme taught in school. The booklet contains a range of spelling patterns, National Curriculum spelling words and ideas for practising at home.
There is no expectation for children to complete formal spelling homework each week. Instead, we encourage them to use their booklet regularly to revisit and consolidate their spelling skills.
A little and often approach is most effective, and even a few minutes of practice can make a real difference. Children can choose the activities that work best for them and are always welcome to practise or explore additional words from their booklet.
We love celebrating children's achievements, both in and out of school. If your child earns a certificate, medal, badge or award through a club or activity, please encourage them to bring it in so that we can celebrate their success together.
We also love hearing about the children's experiences and achievements outside school, so photographs can be shared with us through Class Dojo.
Class Dojo is our main form of communication between school and home.
To help ensure consistency throughout the week, we use a Class Dojo group conversation for each child that includes both class teachers and family members. This means that messages, questions and updates can be seen by everyone involved, helping us to maintain clear and consistent communication regardless of which teacher your child is with that day.
We kindly ask that communication is sent through this group conversation so that both teachers have access to the same information and can respond appropriately. Where parents or carers have separate Class Dojo accounts, individual group conversations can be used to ensure communication is shared appropriately.
Alongside important reminders and messages, we also use Class Dojo to celebrate learning and give families a glimpse into life in Kite Class.
